(08-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Somali National Security and Intelligence Agency (NISA) announced on Monday that they have successfully intercepted and seized jackets containing explosives intended for use in attacks on civilians. The target was the Peace Park, a popular public space situated within the grounds of the national presidency, where people regularly gather for relaxation and leisure activities.
The foiled attack comes as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by Somalia, despite efforts by the government and international partners to stabilize the country and eradicate the threat of terrorism.
NISA stated that the perpetrators had planned to carry out the bombings using a Bajaj motorcycle, which was also apprehended during the operation. Photographs of the explosives and the motorcycle were released to the media as evidence of the thwarted plot.
While the Somali intelligence agency has not disclosed information regarding any individuals involved in the operation or provided further details on the case, security measures in the Peace Park and surrounding areas have been heightened in response to the incident.
The successful operation by NISA showcases the determination of Somali security forces in combating terrorism and maintaining the safety of its citizens. The situation, however, highlights the need for continued vigilance and the importance of a collaborative approach between the government, security agencies, and the public in ensuring the ongoing security of Somalia.
As investigations into the foiled plot continue, the Somali government and security forces remain committed to protecting the nation’s citizens and securing a peaceful and prosperous future for the country.
