(10-10-23) MOGADISHU— The World Health Organisation’s (WHO) Somalia Country Office is collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services to commemorate World Mental Health Day 2023. This year’s theme, “Mental health is a universal human right,” underscores the crucial need for mental health care in a nation like Somalia, which frequently grapples with conflict and bears a significant burden of mental disorders. This day is being marked with various events in Mogadishu and other capital cities across Somalia, rallying under the banner “Our minds, our rights.”

A recent joint study by WHO, the Somali National University, and the Federal Ministry of Health revealed alarming statistics on mental health in Somalia. Surveying 713 individuals aged 25 to 56 across three districts, the study found a high prevalence of mental disorders (76.9%) and substance use disorders (50.6%). These findings suggest that Somali youth experience a greater burden of mental health illnesses than previously believed.

Dr. Mahmud, Director of Hudur Hospital, highlighted the cultural stigma surrounding mental illness in Somalia. He noted that only around 5% of those with mental disorders seek psychiatric help. WHO has been instrumental in aiding the Federal Ministry of Health and Human Services to bolster mental health care in the region. In mid-2023, WHO supported the training of 50 health professionals from regional hospitals in Hudur and Dhusamareb. By August, these professionals had started providing services, broadening the reach of mental health care.

Dr. Saed of Dhusamareb Hospital, a participant in the WHO-organised training, emphasised the need to address the societal pressures that deter people from seeking mental health care. While efforts like training are important in integrating mental health into primary health care, raising awareness within local communities remains crucial. WHO’s longer-term strategy involves instituting training up to a psychology degree course level, aiming to continually enhance the mental health professional network in Somalia.
