(22-11-23) MOGADISHU — Abdirahman Hiti Ibrahim, better known as Abu Abdirahman, a high-ranking leader of the Al-Shabaab militant group, surrendered to government forces in Harardhere, Mudug region on Wednesday. This event marks a significant victory for the Somali National Army (SNA), showcasing the effectiveness of its elite GorGor unit.
Abu Abdirahman, who played a key role in Al-Shabaab’s operations in the Nurdugle and Gulane villages of the Middle Shabelle region for seven years, recently left the city of Galhareeri in the Galgaduud region. His surrender indicates a potential shift in the militant group’s influence and control in these areas.
The Ministry of Defense for the Federal Republic of Somalia confirmed his surrender, citing internal strife within Al-Shabaab as a key factor. This development highlights the success of the SNA’s strategic counter-insurgency operations, which have been intensifying in recent months.
Following his surrender, Abu Abdirahman spoke about the dire conditions within Al-Shabaab, describing them as characterized by internal violence and exploitation.
