(30 Sep 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – An Al-Shabaab militant has surrendered to government security forces in the Middle Shabelle region. The defector, identified as Kassim Ahmed Dhuhul Gesey, also known as “Sullal Ayn,” hails from the liberated Masjid Ali Gadud area.
Speaking to security forces, Gesey said he had served in Al-Shabaab’s ranks for eight years but decided to defect after struggling to endure the harsh conditions in the forest.
He turned himself into the 28th Brigade of the 21st Division. His defection is part of a growing trend in recent months, as intensified military offensives against the Khawarij have led to an increase in fighters abandoning the group across various regions.
