(24 Sep 2024) GAROWE (Halqabsi News) – Puntland has announced plans to launch a military campaign against militant groups hiding in the mountainous regions of Bari and Sanaag. President Said Abdullahi Deni, during a visit to the 54th Battalion of the Puntland paramilitary forces, ordered his forces to prepare for a decisive operation aimed at neutralising the militants.
Speaking to military officers at the 54th Command, President Deni described the militants as “monkeys hiding in the mountains,” vowing that Puntland troops would pursue them to their remote hideouts. “There is no part of our land under the control of anyone but Puntland, except for a few individuals perched on cliffs like monkeys. Our forces will track them down in the mountains,” he asserted.
Both Al-Shabaab and pro-Islamic State groups have a presence in the mountainous areas of Bari and Sanaag, where they carry out IED attacks and hit-and-run raids on main roads, as well as engage in acts of insecurity in the commercial port city of Bossaso.
