(07 Oct 2024) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – Somalia’s resilience amid ongoing security, human rights, and socio-economic challenges underscores the need for continued international support, especially as climate change and natural disasters deepen the crisis, a UN expert said in Geneva. Isha Dyfan, the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia, addressed an Interactive Dialogue attended by key international partners, including representatives from the EU and the UK, emphasising the importance of global assistance to strengthen Somalia’s human rights institutions.

In her address to the Human Rights Council, Dyfan highlighted the toll of the conflict between Somali authorities and Al-Shabaab on civilians, as well as the impact of inter-clan disputes over resources and power. She expressed concern over persistent human rights violations affecting women, children, internally displaced persons, people with disabilities, and minority clans. Dyfan urged the Somali government to adopt specific measures to protect these vulnerable groups.

While she commended recent efforts laying the groundwork for Somalia’s human rights commitments, Dyfan stressed that more work remains, especially for those most affected by ongoing challenges. She called on the international community to continue its support, asserting that only through sustained respect for human rights, democracy, and the rule of law can Somalia move closer to peace and sustainable development.
