(14 Oct 2024)KISMAYO (Halqabsi News) – As part of his ongoing engagement with Somali leaders, Acting United Nations Special Representative James Swan visited Kismayo on Sunday, where he met Jubaland’s President Ahmed Mohamed Islam ‘Ahmed Madobe’. Their discussions covered Somalia’s state-building agenda, efforts against Al-Shabaab, and the National Consultative Council (NCC) meeting, according to a statement from the UN office.
Mr. Swan’s trip to Kismayo followed earlier engagements with senior federal government officials regarding the ongoing NCC discussions in Mogadishu. In all his meetings, Mr. Swan emphasised the importance of maintaining open communication between President Madobe, the Federal Government of Somalia (FGS), and other Federal Member State (FMS) leaders to address unresolved issues within the NCC.
The Jubaland Presidency noted that the discussions touched on the overall political situation in the country, the withdrawal of ATMIS forces, and other key issues. Recently, Jubaland leader Ahmed Madobe withdrew from the ongoing NCC consultations in Mogadishu due to disagreements with federal government leadership over election models and timing.
