(24 Mar 2025) MOGADISHU (Halqabsi News) – The government has deployed additional troops to the Mogadishu-Balcad highway after Al-Shabab fighters were sighted along the route.
Military sources said the Somali National Army (SNA) has launched clearance operations between Balcad and Jowhar, where Al-Shabab have reportedly appeared in villages such as Qalimow.
Residents confirmed new military checkpoints and patrols. “Soldiers are now stationed along the road and are checking vehicles,” one resident told Halqabsi News.
Al-Shabab’s presence has also been reported on roads connecting Balcad to Afgooye, as well as in Ceelasha Biyaha, Lafoole, and Xaawo Cabdi, near Mogadishu.
The militants were seen stopping vehicles and turning off street lights in those areas.
The increased Al-Shabab activity has caused public concern.
Security analysts have warned that Al-Shabab is exploiting security gaps and overstretched forces. The group has recaptured some villages in Lower and Middle Shabelle.
