Mogadishu, Somalia – The Ministry of Planning, Investment and Economic Development of the Federal Government of Somalia have issued a directive for aid and development organisations working in the country to fully relocate their operations within Somalia. The move, which is set to take place between January 30th and March 31st, 2023, is a result of the improved security situation in the country following successful operations against the Al-Shabaab group.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Planning, training and conferences should be held within the country and the Ministry will provide assistance to organisations to make the move. Most aid agencies operating in Somalia currently have offices in Nairobi, Kenya, and the Ministry has warned that appropriate action will be taken against organisations that do not comply with the order.
The move is being seen as a positive step for Somalia’s economic development as it will bring international aid and development organisations closer to the communities they serve. It will also help to further stabilise the security situation in the country and promote transparency in aid delivery.
The international community has also expressed support for the move, with the United Nations and the African Union commending the efforts of the Somali government.
