Mogadishu, Somalia:- The President of the Federal Republic of Somalia, Mr. Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, held a crucial meeting with the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Mrs. Linda-Greenfield Thomas, in Mogadishu today. The meeting focused on the progress of the fight against terrorism in Somalia and the challenges faced by the country.
President Mohamud updated Ambassador Thomas on the Somali forces’ victories against Al-Shabaab terrorists and the liberation of previously occupied territories. He acknowledged the US for its support in the fight against terrorism and emphasised the ongoing threat posed by terrorists in the region.
One of the major challenges Somalia is facing in its anti-terrorism efforts is the arms embargo imposed on the country, which hinders the rebuilding of the military and the elimination of terrorism. President Mohamud expressed his hope that Ambassador Thomas would support lifting the arms embargo and advocate for Somalia in the United Nations Security Council.
Ambassador Linda-Greenfield Thomas praised the President, the government, and the people of Somalia for their bravery in the fight against Al-Shabaab. She also expressed her support for the Somali government’s plan to lift the arms embargo and pledged to work towards a solution in the UN Security Council.
The Ambassador also reiterated the U.S.’s commitment to backing the Somali-led counterterrorism operations and spoke with President Hassan Sheikh about the current humanitarian crisis and the need for a more diverse range of international support to avoid famine and save lives.
The meeting between the President of Somalia and the US Ambassador to the United Nations highlights the strong relationship between the two countries and their commitment to finding a solution to the challenges faced by Somalia in the fight against terrorism.
