UK ambassador to Somalia, Kate Foster, is concluding her tour of duty in the country, having served since February 2021. In an exclusive interview with Goobjoog Media Group, the ambassador spoke about the relationship between Somalia and the UK, the major achievements and challenges during her term, the lessons learned from the 2021/2022 electoral process, and the military offensive against Al-Shabaab.
Ambassador Foster emphasized the importance of the long-term partnership between Somalia and the UK and highlighted the UK’s role as a champion for Somalia in the international community. She highlighted three major achievements during her term, including the successful completion of the IMF program, the averting of a famine in 2022, and her farewell meeting with the president of Somalia.
Ambassador Foster identified The 2021/22 electoral process in Somalia as one of the biggest challenges to Somalia’s recovery during her term. Despite the challenges, she expressed her admiration for Somalia’s leaders and their ability to find channels for dialogue and seek a pathway to consensus even during the most difficult moments.
Regarding the electoral process, Ambassador Foster stressed the need for a more transparent and democratic process in the future, with a focus on moving towards a one-person, one-vote system. She expressed hope that women would have the opportunity to compete more openly and fairly in future elections.
On the military offensive against Al-Shabaab, Ambassador Foster praised the leadership of the federal government and security forces and the commitment of the International community in the fight against the terrorist group. The UK provides support to Somalia in various areas, including training, logistics, and medical evacuation.
