(18-Feb-23) Mogadishu, Somalia – Al-Shabaab has executed six of its own fighters suspected of leaving the group. The incident took place in the outskirts of the Harardhere district in the Mudug region.
Reports suggest that the six fighters had decided to leave the group, but their leaders got wind of the plan and decided to take immediate action. The group shot the six members in a public place in front of the other fighters, in a bid to intimidate them and discourage them from leaving.
The shooting, which took place in the village of Wadaariq, has created panic among the locals, as the area is heavily controlled by Al-Shabaab. Many families have been displaced from other areas and have sought refuge in the village, hoping to escape the fight and attacks between the government and Alshabaab.
Last month, Somalia’s government-led forces successfully captured Harardhere from the al-Shabaab and the nearby town of Galcad. They are currently continuing their efforts to liberate other areas under the control of the group in the Mudug region.
