(10-Mar-23) Burdhubo – A mine explosion caused significant damage in the Burdhubo district of Somalia’s Gedo region on Friday afternoon, injuring the second deputy governor, Nuh Hassan Daud, and killing his son. Another son was also injured in the blast, according to local officials. The injured deputy governor was transported to Mogadishu to receive medical attention.
The mine was reportedly placed inside the deputy governor’s house, which suffered extensive damage in the explosion. The incident follows a string of recent killings of military officers in the region, prompting the Armed Forces Court to dispatch officials for investigation.
Somalia’s government removed military forces from the Gedo region in January, leaving it vulnerable to insurgent attacks. Meanwhile, heavily armed Ethiopian troops have been deployed along the border to combat al-Shabaab militants.
The attack on the deputy governor’s house underscores the ongoing instability in Somalia, where violence has become an all-too-frequent occurrence. Authorities have yet to identify the perpetrators behind the explosion, but the incident is a stark reminder of the dangers that government officials face in their efforts to maintain order and stability in the region.
The lack of a strong security presence in the area has emboldened extremist groups, who have been able to carry out attacks with relative impunity. This has resulted in a sharp increase in violence in the region, with many civilians being caught in the crossfire.
