(14-03-23) Mogadishu – The Governor of Gedo Region, Ahmed Buule Gared, was seriously injured in a suicide attack that targeted a guest house in the Bardhere district of the Gedo region earlier today. The attack was carried out by the militant group, Al-Shabaab, who targeted the building that housed senior Gedo politicians and security forces.
The attack resulted in the deaths of at least five soldiers and four civilians. Preliminary pictures of the aftermath of the suicide car bomb show the extensive damage caused by the explosion. The attack occurred as officials of the Gedo region administration and military officers were meeting to plan an all-out offensive against Al-Shabaab’s presence in Middle and Lower Jubba regions.
According to reports, the attack started with a powerful explosion that shook the entire area. The Governor of Gedo region, Ahmed Buule Gared, and Ahmed Abdullahi Hirsi (Labaale), the commander of the 43rd division of the Somali National Army in Gedo, were among the first casualties. A large number of troops were deployed to the site of the attack, and all the roads in and out of Bardhere district were closed.
The Gedo region has been a hotbed of conflict in recent years, with Al-Shabaab carrying out numerous attacks in the area. The attack on the guest house is a reminder of the challenges that the Somali government faces in its efforts to bring peace and stability to the country.
