(16-04-23) MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia on Sunday announced the successful completion of a special operation targeting leaders of the Al-Shabaab group in the Galgaduud region. The operation, carried out by the Somali army and local forces known as Mawisley, took place in the areas of El Qansah and El Huyun.
A brief statement from the Ministry of Information revealed the names of some of the leaders killed during the operation. Among them was Cartan Iley, a lieutenant to Allsbabaab chairman Yusuf Koba Kutukade. Dahir Alasow, a senior leader of Alshabaab in Middle Shabelle, was also injured in the operation.
The allied forces successfully destroyed Al-Shabaab bases in El Qansah and El Huyun, further crippling the group’s operations in the region. In addition, government and Mawiisleyda forces launched a planned attack on Al-Shabaab positions in the Budbud area of Galgaduud. The operation targeted areas in the village of Hawo Gagal, which was taken over by allied forces yesterday.
Government media reported that the attack inflicted heavy losses on Al-Shabaab, resulting in the deaths of nine members and the destruction of their positions. There was no comment from Al-Shabaab regarding the operation, which claimed the success of the government forces and the local Mawiisleyda forces in Galmudug.
The army and local forces have crossed the Middle Shabelle region and are planning to pursue the group to Elbur. The successful operations are a significant blow to Al-Shabaab and demonstrate the Somali government’s ongoing commitment to eradicating the group from the region.
