(27-04-23) BAIDOA – A member of the Al-Shabaab terrorist organization, Ishaq Maallin Adan (commonly known as Ishaq Alooley), has surrendered to the 60th unit of the Somali National Army in Baidoa. Adan was actively involved in Al-Shabaab’s military operations and participated in battles across the Bay, Gedo, and Middle Shabelle regions.
Adan cited the harm Al-Shabaab has caused to the local population and the group’s overall destructive impact as his reasons for leaving the organization. He is one of many Al-Shabaab fighters who have surrendered in recent months in Galmudug, Lower Shabelle, and South West State.
The Somali National Army, in collaboration with local forces, is currently engaged in the second phase of its fight against Al-Shabaab. This follows the successful completion of the first phase, which focused on cutting off the group’s financial resources.
Military and government officials have expressed optimism about the progress being made against Al-Shabaab, as increasing numbers of its fighters are choosing to surrender. The Somali government continues to encourage those who wish to leave the group and reintegrate into society, offering amnesty and support programs to help facilitate this process.
