(19-04-23) MOGADISHU – Al-Shabaab militants in the Elbur district of the Galgaduud Region have reportedly handed over their weapons to the traditional elders of the area, according to the Somali National news agency (SONNA).
SONNA reports that the decision to transfer weapons came after a meeting between Al-Shabaab representatives and local elders in the Elbur district. Leader Syed Ahmed Gaagale, accompanied by other prominent figures from the area, attended the meeting. The traditional elders, who have limited power in the face of Al-Shabaab’s presence in Elbur, were left with little choice but to accept the weapons to protect themselves and their property.
Following the transfer of weapons, Al-Shabaab has ordered its fighters in Elbur to blend in with the local population. The news agency also reports that several senior leaders have left the area. This move comes after increasing pressure from the Federal Government of Somalia and Galmudug forces to drive out the militant group from the region.
While the handover of weapons is a positive development, it remains to be seen whether this marks a significant shift in Al-Shabaab’s activities in the area or is merely a tactical move in response to mounting external pressure.
The Somali government and regional forces, along with international partners, continue to work towards weakening the militant group’s influence in the country in the second phase of the fight against Alshabaab, striving to bring lasting peace and stability to Somalia.
