(03-04-23) MOGADISHU – A convoy belonging to the African Transitional Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) was targeted in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack in the Hodan district of Mogadishu today. The incident occurred at around 14:02hrs near the KM4 area, as confirmed by an official statement on the ATMIS Twitter account.
Eyewitnesses in the area reported that the explosion was quickly followed by gunshots. The attack has resulted in civilian casualties at the busy KM4 intersection. Additionally, several local businesses have suffered significant losses due to the attack.
The affected area is a crucial road connecting the city of Mogadishu and is located near several government offices. This bustling area is often filled with heavy traffic and large crowds, making the attack especially devastating for the local community.
As of now, the government has not released any official details on the number of casualties or the extent of the damage. ATMIS has stated that an assessment of the security situation is currently underway.
The attack comes amid ongoing efforts by ATMIS and the Somali government to stabilize the country and counter the threats posed by extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab.
