(25-04-23) KAMPALA – Representatives from the countries contributing troops to the African Troop Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) convened in Kampala to deliberate on strategies to enhance the ongoing fight against the al-Shabaab terrorist group and further the liberation of Somalia. The meeting serves as a precursor to an upcoming summit in Uganda, which will host the presidents of Djibouti, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, and the Somali government.
The ATMIS forces, tasked with the responsibility of combating al-Shabaab, anticipate the imminent eradication of the extremist group from the nation. Participants at the meeting expressed optimism regarding the considerable progress achieved through the combined efforts of the armed forces and Somali citizens.
The Somali delegation in attendance highlighted the significant victories in the battle against al-Shabaab and the successful implementation of the plan to stabilize the country. They affirmed that Somalia is now in a favourable position to transition security responsibilities to the Somali National Army by the end of 2024.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud had previously requested his Ugandan counterpart, President Yoweri Museveni, to host the meeting to address ATMIS-related concerns. The upcoming summit in Uganda, attended by the presidents of the troop-contributing nations and the Somali government, will further solidify regional cooperation and commitment to eradicating the threat posed by al-Shabaab and ensuring a stable, secure future for Somalia.
