(19-04-23) MOGADISHU – The Governor of Banadir Region and the Mayor of Mogadishu, Mr. Yusuf Hussein Jimale (Madaale), held a productive meeting with a delegation led by Mrs. Makiko Watanabe, a Senior Urban Specialist in the Global Practice for Social, Urban, Rural, and Resilience at the World Bank, at the Mogadishu Municipal Headquarters.

The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, primarily focused on discussing the development plan for the capital city of Mogadishu. Key areas of discussion included the construction of roads, water and sewer systems, and working together to develop informal areas.

During the meeting, both parties stressed the importance of finding a lasting solution for the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) who have been significantly affected by the ongoing conflicts and natural disasters in Somalia. By working collaboratively, they hope to create a more stable and sustainable environment for the city’s residents.

The World Bank’s Urban Development Project aims to improve access to basic urban services and promote sustainable urban growth in developing cities around the world. Through this project, the World Bank provides financial and technical assistance to help governments implement effective urban development strategies.

Mayor Jimale expressed his appreciation for the World Bank’s continued support and commitment to the development of Mogadishu. He emphasized the importance of working together to improve the living conditions of the city’s residents and promote social and economic development.

Mrs. Watanabe acknowledged the challenges faced by Mogadishu and expressed the World Bank’s readiness to assist the city in achieving its development goals. She highlighted the importance of a comprehensive and well-structured plan to ensure the successful implementation of infrastructure projects and the development of informal areas.

The meeting concluded with a mutual agreement to continue working closely together to achieve the common goal of improving the quality of life for the residents of Mogadishu. This collaboration will help to accelerate the city’s development and create a better future for its residents.
