(10-04-23) MOGADISHU – The Iyal Weero gang has become a major concern for residents in parts of Mogadishu, as the armed group continues to engage in violence, theft, and disruption. The Karaan district in the Banadir region is now one of the most insecure areas due to the activities of the Iyal Weero gang.
The administration and security forces in Karaan district have failed to address the escalating insecurity and violence caused by the gang. In a recent interview with a local television station, Commissioner Abshir Karaan disclosed that he held a meeting with several Iyal Weero gang leaders to discuss the issue.
The commissioner reported that during the meeting, the gang members talked about how to end the insecurity and unrest they have caused in the district, but ultimately, the discussion yielded no positive outcomes. This meeting sparked a heated debate among local residents, many of whom argued that the gang leaders should have been imprisoned and punished rather than engaged in talks.
Residents voiced their frustration over the lack of action against the known gang leaders, urging the regional administration and security agencies to take decisive action without showing mercy. The Iyal Weero gang has been responsible for numerous murders and acts of terror in the Karaan district. In some cases, apprehended gang members have been subsequently released, further fueling public outrage and concern.
As the situation in the Karaan district continues to deteriorate, pressure is mounting on local authorities and security agencies to find a solution that will put an end to the Iyal Weero gang’s reign of terror.
