(03-4-23) MOGADISHU– Under the leadership of the Somali Prime Minister, Mr. Hamse Abdi Barre, a high-level summit focusing on security enhancement and the eradication of Al-Shabaab took place in Mogadishu. The conference aimed to discuss the intensification of security efforts, the elimination of Al-Shabaab, the development of security-promoting legislation, and the possible lifting of the arms embargo on Somalia.
During the summit, attendees were briefed on the ongoing operations to stabilize national security and the second phase of campaigns to liberate Somalia from Al-Shabaab. Furthermore, the meeting tackled the national strategy to counter extremist ideology, a vital component for establishing a secure and peaceful society.
The National Center for Combating Extremist Ideology WAANO received approval for its name and responsibilities during the conference. Falling under the Prime Minister’s Office, WAANO will function as the central coordinating body for efforts to counter extremist ideologies in Somalia.
Prime Minister Hamse Abdi Barre stressed the significance of stabilizing and freeing the nation from the grip of Al-Shabaab, asserting that accomplishing this objective would allow the Somali community to prosper and foster progress and justice.
Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of creating laws to guide security initiatives, ensuring the long-term safety and stability of the country.
The summit attracted support from regional and international partners, showcasing a united commitment to fighting Al-Shabaab and fostering peace and security in Somalia. Participants deliberated on strategies to improve coordination and collaboration among security forces and integrate regional and international resources to accomplish shared security objectives.
