(21-04-23) MOGADISHU – The Federal Government of Somalia has begun the evacuation process for Somali students stranded in Sudan, moving them to neighbouring Ethiopia as an interim solution. This development was confirmed by Ambassador Abdirahman Nur Mohammed Dinaari, the acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in an interview with VOA.
Dinaari disclosed that 50 students have already been transported to the Ethiopian border, and arrangements are in place for the remaining students to be evacuated. The Somali embassy has organized transportation for this purpose. Following their arrival in Ethiopia, the students will be transferred back to Somalia in the coming days.
The decision to evacuate comes after a number of Somali students in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital, requested assistance from the Somali government in leaving the country, due to growing concerns over safety and political unrest in the region.
Sudan has been experiencing a fierce conflict between the Sudanese military and paramilitary forces, resulting in the loss of over 330 lives. This violent power struggle erupted last weekend between two formerly allied leaders of Sudan’s ruling military junta, highlighting the precarious nature of the country’s political climate.
