(21-04-23) LASANOOD – Three individuals, including a 10-year-old girl, were injured in a shelling incident by the Somaliland army during Eid celebrations today.
Witnesses reported that several shells struck the city during the early hours of the morning, causing panic and chaos among the residents. The injured, including the young girl, were rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. The current status of their injuries is unknown at this time. Locals in the area expressed outrage and sadness over the incident, which marred an otherwise joyous occasion.
This latest attack comes amidst growing international condemnation and pressure on the Somaliland government. Garaad Jama, head of SSC Traditional Leaders, urged the Somaliland authorities to withdraw their troops from the SSC regions. The international community has also been applying pressure on President Musa Bihi to deescalate the conflict and withdraw from Lascaano.
Amnesty International’s report released yesterday detailed various human rights cases of abuse committed by the Somaliland government, including indiscriminate shelling of civilian areas, extrajudicial killings, and forced displacements. The organization called for an immediate end to these abuses and for the international community to hold the Somaliland government accountable for its actions.
