(16-05-23) MOGADISHU – On Tuesday, the Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) issued an order to suspend all flights to and from Garowe in Puntland, citing security concerns and fears for the safety of passengers and aircraft. This follows reports of increased tensions in the region, with Puntland forces and tribal militias facing off over election issues.
“Due to the current security situation at Garowe Airport, we have taken the necessary steps to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew,” an SCAA spokesperson told Halqabsi News.
This comes amidst escalating tensions outside the airport where Puntland forces and tribal militias are at loggerheads over election issues. Eyewitnesses reported heavily armed vehicles at the entrance of the airport, raising fears of impending violence.
One of the airlines affected by the suspension is Ethiopian Airlines, which operates daily flights to and from Garowe. Stranded passengers were forced to disembark in Bosaso, causing distress. “We’re deeply concerned about the current state of affairs. We just want to get home safely,” one passenger told Halqabsi News.
Local airline Halla Airlines, which operates flights between Mogadishu and Garowe, has also been impacted. Members of the company expressed their anxiety about the escalating tension in the Nugaal region. “We’re constantly monitoring the situation. Safety is our top priority,” said a representative of the airline.
The suspension of flights is not the only crisis the Puntland region is currently facing. A violent clash near the airport last night resulted in the death of at least three Puntland Maritime Police Force (PMPF). An additional ten others were injured. The clash was reportedly between security forces and opponents, though the exact cause is still under investigation.
This clash comes just hours after opposition politicians urged the public to halt the elections by refusing to vote in order to prevent further security crises. The situation in Garowe remains tense, with residents and international observers closely monitoring the unfolding events.
