(29-05-23) MOGADISHU – On Monday, Former Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo expressed his support for universal suffrage in the forthcoming district, regional, and federal elections. The endorsement came in a thoughtfully worded Facebook post on Monday.
“We welcome the general principles of the agreement reached by the leaders of the National Consultative Council on 27/5/2023,” Farmaajo stated in his post. He emphasised the importance of the Somali people directly electing their representatives in a system based on the principles of universal suffrage.
“The Somali people have been waiting to see the leaders and representatives they have elected with their votes, based on the multi-party system,” he added, highlighting the long-awaited political progression in the nation.
Farmaajo’s endorsement marks an important moment in Somalia’s political landscape, as the country moves towards a more inclusive and democratic system. Although he no longer holds the presidency, Farmaajo’s influential voice continues to resonate in the country’s political discourse.
His support for universal suffrage illustrates his ongoing commitment to the democratic process in Somalia and his belief in the essential role that every citizen should play in electing their representatives. This endorsement could well be a catalyst in the implementation of a new electoral system, fostering greater inclusivity and representation in the nation’s governance.
