(22-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Mogadishu police, have successfully disrupted a potentially deadly Al-Shabaab attack in the city’s Wadajir district in the Banadir region. A planned explosion, traced back to the militant group, was detonated in a controlled manner, thus averting disaster, according to the Banadir Police Command. The foiled strike involved a mine concealed in the window of a residential building in the district. Fortunately, the operation was handled without causing damage to properties or loss of life, thanks to the swift response by the local police and cooperative residents.
“On Monday 22-05-2023 at around 09:20 am, the Wadajir District Police, with the invaluable assistance of local residents, obtained information concerning a landmine placed strategically in the window of a dwelling. The explosive was efficiently defused and detonated in a safe manner, causing no harm,” the Police Command revealed in a concise statement.
The police authority seized this occasion to urge the city’s inhabitants to remain vigilant and work in sync with the regional security forces. “Citizens, if you witness any suspicious activity or security breaches, please report promptly to the nearest police station or dial the emergency number 991,” the Somali Police announced.
This successful disruption of the planned explosion comes on the back of another significant operation in the Howlwadaag district the previous night. Two individuals believed to be Al-Shabaab operatives were apprehended during this operation.
“In an operation that occurred in the Howlwadaag district, we successfully apprehended two suspects alleged to be members of Al-Shabaab,” stated the police spokesperson in a follow-up report.
Mogadishu has recently seen a surge in large-scale security operations that successfully intercepted and curtailed numerous planned attacks. Authorities have also seized various arms intended for Al-Shabaab.
