(07-05-23) BAIDOA – President Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagaren of the South West State of Somalia presided over the South West Security Council meeting, where regional security issues and strategies for strengthening cooperation between security agencies were discussed.

The meeting, held at the Presidential Palace in Baidoa, focused on the ongoing security situation in the South West region, particularly the fight against the Al-Shabaab terrorist group. Al-Shabaab, a militant Islamist organization, has been responsible for numerous attacks in the region, resulting in the loss of many innocent lives.

President Laftagaren emphasised the importance of collaboration between various security agencies, including the Somali National Army (SNA), the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), and regional security forces. The Council highlighted the need for increased coordination and sharing of intelligence to enhance the efficiency of anti-insurgency operations.

The South West Security Council acknowledged the progress made in recent operations against Al-Shabaab, which have resulted in the liberation of several key areas in South West State. Nevertheless, the Council emphasised the need to intensify ongoing operations to reclaim the remaining areas under the insurgents’ control.

As part of the strategy, the Council is committed to mobilizing additional resources to support the Somali security forces in their efforts to eliminate Al-Shabaab. It also plans to strengthen the capacity of local communities to resist insurgent infiltration, by providing essential services and economic opportunities.

The South West Security Council meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to safeguarding the region and its people from the threat posed by Al-Shabaab. The participants vowed to continue their efforts until peace and stability are fully restored to the South West State of Somalia.
