(26-05-23) BOSASO – US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, the first Somali-American to hold federal office, has lauded Puntland’s successful local government elections. In a video message on Thursday, she extended her congratulations and expressed hopes for such democratic success to permeate all of Somalia.
“Congratulations to the people of Puntland. I congratulate you for participating in the elections today. It is something to be happy about and be proud of,” Omar said, emphasising the importance of democratic participation.
She also recognised Puntland’s President, Said Abdullahi Deni, for his key role in the successful execution of the elections. “I congratulate President Deni, who invested a lot of time and made it possible for this election to be held,” she noted.
This historic election saw robust participation, with over 387,000 registered voters, a significant portion of whom were women and youths.
Encouraging wider democratic practices in Somalia, Omar voiced, “I hope that these elections will not be limited to Puntland and will reach everywhere, and we will see Somalia voting everywhere and everyone can cast their vote.” Her message “emulate Puntland,” mirrored her aspirations for a more inclusive and representative democracy throughout Somalia.
