(01-05-23) MOGADISHU – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud participated in an open town-hall meeting in Mogadishu on Monday night, where he took televised questions from the public and provided updates on the government’s performance in fighting terrorism and promoting progress in the country.
“The Somali people want to participate in the war against terrorism. Their determination is central to our plans and our success,” President Mohamud said. He pointed out that terrorism has been the biggest challenge facing the nation, causing the loss of thousands of lives and hindering development and cooperation among Somalis.
He also touched on Somalia’s relationship with the United Arab Emirates, calling it their “biggest friend” in the fight against terrorism. “They have trained our forces and given us money,” he said.
Regarding the LasAnod conflict and the SCC-KHATUMO issue, the President said that the government is working on finding a peaceful solution while keeping the door open for dialogue with Somaliland. He expressed special sympathy for the SCS people, as they carry the Somali flag and advocate for unity.
President Mohamud also defended the appointment of family members to government positions, stating that they have the same rights as other citizens and that it’s not a shame to give a job to a relative.
He praised the sacrifices of the Somali forces and the people in the liberated areas, expressing high hopes for the country’s future when it is free from terrorism. “Al-Shabaab has been squeezed from the riverside and the seaside. They are in the middle. The first phase was Hirshabelle and Galmudug, and the second phase is Jubbaland and the Southwest.
Answering questions on various topics, including the rule of law, federal and state cooperation, reconciliation, and international relations, President Mohamud highlighted the historic achievement of the Somali Parliament signing 11 laws in one sitting.
On the issue of Lascaanod, he reiterated the importance of stopping the conflict and bloodshed before negotiating. Regarding Puntland, the President mentioned assigning three state presidents to listen to their requests and concerns.
President Mohamud also addressed international relations, stating that Somalia maintains friendly relations with all countries and is even willing to mediate between conflicting nations.
Discussing the separation of government powers, he emphasized that the powers of the Prime Minister are defined in the constitution, with the Cabinet being responsible for executing tasks. Lastly, on the topic of elections, President Mohamud said he is determined not to return to office and that the government has a plan for a more democratic electoral process in 2026.
