(03-05-23) HARGEISA – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi held a video conference today with UK Minister of State for Development and African Affairs, Andrew Mitchell, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Lasanood, the capital of the Sool region. The city has been witnessing clashes between the Somaliland army and local SSC forces.

President Abdi informed Minister Mitchell about the government’s stance on the situation in Lasanood, expressing readiness for an unconditional ceasefire in pursuit of a lasting peace solution. He urged the international community to call on the Puntland-Somalia administration to withdraw its forces from Lasanood and respect Somaliland’s borders.

The President explained that the Puntland regional administration’s presence in Lasanood is aimed at altering tribal borders, which could have far-reaching consequences for other African countries. He emphasized Somaliland’s commitment to defending its territory and borders, just like any other sovereign nation.

During the meeting, President Abdi also updated Minister Mitchell on the upcoming election activities in Somaliland. The government has already prepared the necessary expenses for the elections, including the distribution of voter cards expected to take place in early June under the supervision of the National Elections Commission. President Abdi stressed the government’s readiness to participate in the elections for national parties and the presidential election.

Minister Mitchell tweeted “I spoke to Somaliland President Bihi and raised concerns over the conflict in Las Anod, and delays to elections. The economic potential in Somaliland is huge – but stability is fundamental to success. An immediate ceasefire is needed & an electoral roadmap
needs to be published.”

Minister Mitchell further expressed the UK government’s willingness to work with Somaliland on the elections and help find a resolution to the Lasanood conflict. The two leaders concluded their discussion by exploring investment cooperation between Somaliland and the UK.

The meeting was attended by Somaliland Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr Isse Keyd Mohamud.
