(06-05-23) MOGADISHU – A high-ranking delegation from Sudan, led by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Daf Elah Haji Ali, arrived in Mogadishu on Saturday for a series of meetings with senior leaders of the Federal Government of Somalia. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, Hamse Aden Hadow, received the delegation at the airport and expressed his government’s willingness to foster closer ties between the two nations.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions in Sudan following the outbreak of armed conflicts between the military government and the RSF (Rapid Support Forces) group on April 15. The clashes have led to a deteriorating security situation in the country, prompting the Somali government to initiate efforts to rescue and repatriate Somali citizens caught in the violence.
The agenda of the talks between the Sudanese delegation and Somali government officials are expected to cover a range of issues, including the current security situation in Sudan, potential collaboration on regional peace and security, as well as the ongoing efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of Somali citizens in Sudan.
The Somali government has already commenced rescue operations for its citizens, working closely with international partners to provide logistical support and facilitate their safe return. Both countries are expected to explore avenues for further cooperation in this regard, as well as discuss the possible roles that Somalia can play in helping to resolve the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The visit by the Sudanese delegation underscores the significance of the relationship between the two countries, which share not only historical ties but also mutual interests in promoting regional stability and security. With the situation in Sudan remaining uncertain, the talks in Mogadishu could prove instrumental in charting a path forward for both nations and the broader region.
