(18-05-23) MOGADISHU – The newly-appointed UK Ambassador to Somalia, Mike Nithavrianakis, has reiterated the United Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to supporting Somalia in combating the militant group Al-Shabaab and addressing its ongoing humanitarian needs.
“In his first meeting with the President of Galmudug, Ahmed Abdi Karie Qoorqoor, Ambassador Mike Nithavrianakis emphasised UK commitment to supporting Somalia in the fight against Al-Shabaab,” the UK embassy in Mogadishu tweeted. “The pair also discussed the strong partnership between UK and Somalia in tackling humanitarian needs and security challenges.”
President Qoorqoor, in a separate tweet, acknowledged the continued support from the UK government. He expressed gratitude, saying, “We thank the UK government for their continued support to a prosperous Somalia.”
Ambassador Nithavrianakis, who took over from Ms Kate Foster OBE in April this year, presented his credentials to President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud last Thursday. On the occasion, he stated, “I am optimistic about our partnership and our work together tackling the challenges facing Somalia.”
He further emphasized the UK’s ongoing relationship with the region during a meeting with the President of the South West State of Somalia, Abdiaziz Hassan Mohamed Laftagareen. He conveyed his anticipation of a productive partnership focused on security and response to the humanitarian crisis.
As the Ambassador steps into his new role amidst considerable challenges, these engagements underline the UK’s continued commitment to supporting Somalia. Notably, the discussions reinforce the importance of international partnership in addressing security threats and humanitarian needs, critical issues faced by Somalia today.
