(16-05-23) MOGADISHU – The Chairperson of the Independent Constitution Review and Implementation Commission (ICRIC), Burhan Adan Omar, and Deputy Chair Mohamed Hassan Idris held a productive meeting with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) Deputy Chief Senior Political Affairs Christina Hajdu and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Resident Representative for Somalia Sophie Kemkhadze. The meeting, which took place at UN offices in Mogadishu on Tuesday in Mogadishu, aimed to discuss the ongoing constitutional review process in Somalia and the essential role played by the UN in supporting the nation’s progress.

Somalia has been undergoing a constitutional review process to improve its governance structure and foster national unity since 2013. The ICRIC, established to oversee this process, has been working closely with international partners, including the UN, to ensure the development of a constitution that reflects the needs and aspirations of the Somali people.

During the meeting, ICRIC Chairperson Burhan Adan Omar expressed gratitude for the ongoing support provided by the UNDP and UNSOM. “The supports of UNDP-Somalia and UNSomalia to Somalia in the constitutional review process, the rule of law and development are crucial and well appreciated,” he said.

Deputy Chair Mohamed Hassan Idris, who spoke to Halqabsi News following the meeting, reiterated the significance of the UN’s involvement in the process. “The United Nations has been a vital partner in our efforts to create a comprehensive and inclusive constitution that will strengthen the rule of law, promote good governance, and support the development of our nation,” he said.

In response, UNSOM Deputy Chief Christina Hajdu and UNDP Resident Representative Sophie Kemkhadze reaffirmed their commitment to assisting Somalia in achieving these goals. They highlighted the importance of the constitutional review process in promoting stability, strengthening democratic institutions, and fostering inclusive political dialogue.

As the constitutional review process enters its final stages, the continued collaboration between the ICRIC and international partners like the UNDP and UNSOM is critical in ensuring a successful outcome that will benefit all Somalis.
