(05-06-23) MOGADISHU — The newly appointed Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Somalia, Catriona Laing, touched down in Mogadishu on Monday, receiving a warm welcome from high-ranking Somali government officials.
Laing was met at Aden Adde International Airport by a delegation led by the Minister of Information, Daud Aweys. The welcome committee reflected the government’s readiness to engage and collaborate with the new envoy in pursuit of peace and stability in the country.
Expressing gratitude for the reception, Laing affirmed her commitment to infusing fresh perspectives into the United Nations’ role in Somalia. “I’m very pleased to be here and look forward to working with national and international partners in support of the Somali people and government,” Laing remarked upon her arrival.

She succeeds James Swan of the United States, who has led UNSOM with unwavering dedication over the past four years, earning the Secretary-General’s heartfelt appreciation for his service.
Laing brings a wealth of diplomatic experience to her new role, having previously served as British High Commissioner to Nigeria and British Ambassador to Zimbabwe between 2014 and 2018. Her broad international expertise is expected to be a significant asset in furthering the mission of the United Nations in Somalia.
As Laing commences her journey in Somalia, the international community keenly watches, hoping her leadership will foster the stability and development the country has been striving for.
