(03-06-23) MOGADISHU — On Saturday, an explosion rippled through the heart of Mogadishu, targeting Secretary Ahmad Garar, the private secretary of Member of Parliament (MP) and Special Presidential Envoy for Drought Response Abdirahman Abdishakur Warsame. The blast, caused by a mine attached to his vehicle, occurred on Maka Al Mukarama road, near the Waberi district station.
As of yet, no group has claimed responsibility for the assault, which deepens the cloud of uncertainty hanging over Mogadishu and amplifies existing fears for the safety of public figures.
The injured secretary was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment. Details about his condition remain undisclosed.
In the aftermath of the explosion, Somali security forces initiated operations at the scene of the incident, Debka intersection, in the vicinity of Waberi station, to trace the assailants, though specific details are yet to be revealed.
“The attack on Secretary Ahmad Garar is deeply unsettling and underscores the persistent insecurity faced by public figures in our city,” said a local resident Ahmed Ali. “Our prayers are with him for a speedy recovery.”
The attack also raises questions about the effectiveness of current security measures in Mogadishu and will likely spark fresh debate on reinforcing safety protocols for the public.
