(11-06-23) MOGADISHU — A police officer, Nasib Dahir Abdi, was critically injured in a vehicle explosion that rocked the Zoobe intersection in Mogadishu early on Sunday. The blast is believed to have been caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) attached to his luxury car. The car, which was destroyed in the explosion, was passing through Zoobe when the IED detonated.
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing scene, as security forces swiftly arrived and cordoned off the area. Officer Abdi was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Amidst the chaos, Makkah Al-Mukaramo road was temporarily shut down as Prime Minister Hamza Abdi made his way to a ceremony at a hospital in Madinah.
This incident follows a series of similar explosions that have besieged Zoobe in recent times, with many lives lost, others injured, and significant infrastructural damage. The once bustling road has witnessed a devastating escalation in violence, impacting daily life and instilling fear in the residents.
This is the fifth such bombing in the past week in Mogadishu, the latest of which occurred last Friday when Al-Shabaab launched a direct attack near Lido beach. These incidents are part of a troubling rise in security concerns within the capital.
As of now, there has been no official statement from the Somali security officials regarding the damage caused by this morning’s explosion. The local population eagerly awaits a response as they grapple with the increased threats to their safety.
