(07-06-23) MOGADISHU — Somalia’s top leaders met with the newly appointed United Nations Special Representative today, discussing potential collaborations to continue improving the nation’s socio-economic, security, and political development.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Ambassador Catriona Laing, at Villa Somalia. According to Villa Somalia, the discussions focused on the key objectives of the federal government and the continued partnership between Somalia and the UN.
Shortly after, Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre also welcomed Ms Laing. The two delved into conversations around the UN’s support for Somalia’s transition towards more sustainable developments, reviewing how they can further strengthen this progress through government-led initiatives.
In a social media statement, the Prime Minister commended the UN family for their unwavering support of the Somali people and institutions. He acknowledged their combined efforts in averting a potential famine in 2022, which he said saved millions of lives. In a request for ongoing cooperation, the Prime Minister emphasised the need to align UN support with the current agenda of the government.
The high-profile meetings underline Somalia’s intent to continue strengthening its partnership with the UN, signalling a promising future of cooperation for the betterment of the nation.
