(05-06-23) MOGADISHU — Somali Disaster Management Agency (SoDMA) Commissioner, Mahamud Moallim, issued a stark warning on Monday about looming storms, adding to the country’s already devastating drought crisis.
Speaking at the Humanitarian Coordination Forum in Kismayo, Moallim said the storms could pose a grave risk to the country’s vulnerable population. “We don’t know how bad this weather will be, but it may well endanger the already-vulnerable population across the country,” he warned.
The conference, convened in response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis caused by persistent climate-fueled droughts, sought to rally international donors, civil society, and humanitarian workers.
Highlighting government data, Moallim stated that over a million people have been affected by recent flooding, with nearly 400,000 displaced in various regions. He emphasized the urgent need for clean water, shelter, food, health services, and emergency education in these areas.
The Commissioner urged humanitarian relief agencies to redouble their efforts to help the country navigate these unprecedented challenges.
