(04-06-23) GALKAYO — Several fatalities and numerous injuries have been reported following a violent tribal conflict that erupted on Saturday on the outskirts of the Afbarwako area in the Mudug region. The skirmish, which unfolded between militias from neighbouring states, Puntland and Galmudug, resulted in the death of at least seven people and left five others injured.
A local resident, who remained anonymous, provided insight into the incident. He highlighted that the attackers allegedly belonged to the administration of Puntland. “Actually, if you look at the two militias from Puntland and Galmudug, those who launched the attack are from Puntland,” he said.
The anonymous resident added that a serious fight broke out in the area. “It was immediately felt there,” he stated, suggesting a noticeable change in the area’s atmosphere following the attack. This event adds to a history of conflict and tribal warfare in Mudug, a region that has seen violent confrontations involving both Puntland and Galmudug militias.
The situation in Mudug remains tense, with reports suggesting opposing movements within some parts of the region. It is unclear at this stage if there will be an immediate response from the administrations of Puntland and Galmudug or if regional authorities plan on intervening to mitigate the ongoing conflicts.
