(11/08/23) MOGADISHU – In a ceremony held at the African Union Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) Force Headquarters, 18 senior staff officers were honored for their outstanding contributions to the peacekeeping mission. The officers, who completed a one-year tour of duty, received African Union medals, pins of gallantry, and certificates of appreciation. Their roles encompassed operations, logistics, medical, and information sectors, vital for restoring stability in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.
Maj. Gen. Marius Ngendabanka, ATMIS Deputy Force Commander for Operations and Plans, conveyed heartfelt appreciation on behalf of AU Special Representative for Somalia, Ambassador Mohamed El-Amine Souef, and ATMIS Force Commander Lt. Gen. Sam Okiding. Maj. Gen. Peter Kimani Muteti, ATMIS Deputy Force Commander for Logistics and Support, commended the officers’ valuable roles in fulfilling the mission’s mandate.
Kenya led the honourees with twelve officers, while Benin, Nigeria, Uganda, and Zimbabwe contributed the remaining six officers. The ceremony celebrated not just their duration of service, but their significant contributions toward lasting peace in Somalia.
