(25-08-23) MOGADISHU – The Somali Government announced on Friday that a total of 32 Al-Shabaab militants were killed in two separate operations carried out by the Somali National Army, supported by international forces, in the Lower Shabelle region.
The first of these coordinated operations occurred on Thursday night at Sheikhow farm, located 16 kilometres from the Awdheegle district. The action led to the killing of 27 Al-Shabaab militants and the destruction of an army camp along with multiple insurgent positions.
In a subsequent operation aimed at clearing the riverside area in Basra, an additional five Al-Shabaab militants were killed.
“A significant step was taken to safeguard our communities from Al-Shabaab and their extremist activities,” a spokesperson for the Somali National Army said. “This sends a strong message that attempts to destabilise the nation will not be tolerated.”
Local residents and international allies assisting in the operations also discovered a group of militants planning to disrupt the army’s activities; these militants were subsequently neutralised.
The actions signify an intensifying collaboration between the Somali National Army and its international partners in combating extremism in the region.
