(16-08-23) NAIROBI – An MP from Somalia’s Jubaland state, Yusuf Mohamed Gurhan, was detained in Mandera, Kenya, after being found in possession of a fraudulent Kenyan identification card. He was arrested on Monday at a bus checkpoint and spent overnight at Mandera police station.
Gitari Muchira, the head of Kenya’s criminal investigation department, said that despite receiving a request for the MP’s release from the governor of Beled Haawo in Somalia, citing his immunity, Mohamed will appear in court on Wednesday.
“We’ve received a letter from the governor of Beled Haawo requesting the release of the Jubaland parliament member due to his immunity,” stated Muchira.
In addition to the forgery charge, Mohamed is also accused of entering Kenya from an unauthorised location where entry wasn’t permitted.
