(26-08-23) MOGADISHU — The National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) has executed a targeted operation against Al-Shabaab, focusing on the group’s judiciary and rapid troop movement capabilities in the Jambalul area of Lower Shabelle, according to NISA statement.
In a planned operation carried out on Friday, NISA forces destroyed an Al-Shabaab-operated court, thereby dismantling a key part of the militant group’s parallel governance structures. The court had been meting out its form of justice in the area, often creating tensions with formal legal systems.
Additionally, the operation successfully neutralised a site used by Al-Shabaab for the extortion of money from local residents and road users. The extortion site had reportedly been a significant source of revenue for the group.
In terms of logistical gains, NISA seized five FEKON motorbikes, which had been utilised by Al-Shabaab for rapid troop movements and hit-and-run attacks. The motorbikes were fully operational and are now in the possession of government forces, as reported by NISA statement.
The operation is part of a larger, ongoing offensive campaign against Al-Shabaab across several Somali regions, including Shabelle, Hiiraan, Galgaduud, and Mudug. Government forces are actively pursuing the militant group, and multiple operations are reportedly underway.
