(25-08-23) DHUSAMAREB – Somali Armed Forces, backed by local residents, have successfully retaken the historic town of Elbur from the terrorist group Al-Shabaab, ending nearly a decade of militant control, officials said Friday.

The recapture marks a significant victory for the Somali government, which has been struggling to regain territory from the extremist group. Elbur, known for its trade, quarry extraction, and clay pot production, had been under Al-Shabaab’s control since early 2014.

Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Ibrahim Sheikh Muhiyidin praised the operation and highlighted the contributions of both the military and the local community. “This is not just a victory for our forces, but for the people of Elbur who have suffered under Al-Shabaab’s oppressive rule for years,” he said.

However, security experts have warned of potential retaliatory attacks by Al-Shabaab. The group has a history of hit-and-run tactics, particularly after vacating strongholds.

According to Defence Minister Abdulqadir Mohamed Nur, government troops are taking precautions to ensure the safety and stability of the recently liberated area. “Our forces are not letting down their guard. We are aware of Al-Shabaab’s previous tactics and are prepared for any potential surprise attacks,” he said.

The retaking of Elbur follows an earlier, short-lived victory in 2014 when Somali troops, backed by Ethiopian forces, had temporarily reclaimed the town. Despite their withdrawal due to a persistent Al-Shabaab siege, this latest effort marks a crucial turning point in the government’s ongoing struggle against extremism.

Analysts suggest that while the recapture of Elbur is an important milestone, the Somali Armed Forces will need to outperform previous security measures to ensure lasting stability in the region.

The liberation of Elbur is seen as more than just a tactical win; it’s symbolic of the Somali government’s persistent efforts to eradicate terrorist factions and restore peace across the nation.
