(16-08-23) DHUSAMAREB – A combined force of Somali military, local units, and Ethiopian contingents have set in motion a critical operation targeting the towns of Elbur and Galhareeri on Wednesday, aiming to reclaim territories under Al-Shabaab’s dominion for over fifteen years.
These forces, conspicuously equipped and accompanied by a formidable fleet of military vehicles, have commenced their convergence upon the two cities from different directions. A significant portion of these troops moved from Dhusamareb, the capital of Galmudug, while another division proceeded from the Mahaas district of Hiraan.
Troops departing from Dhusamareeb are focused on ousting Al-Shabaab from Elbur and Galhareeri. Meanwhile, forces advancing from Mahaas are set to bolster defences in the Wabxo area, anticipating potential Al-Shabaab offensives.
A senior military official, speaking to Halqabsi News on condition of anonymity, stated, “The offensive on the towns is imminent. It might be today, it might be tomorrow, but our forces are ready and determined.”
The involvement of Ethiopian forces, as part of ATMIS and Frontlines states, signifies a broader regional commitment to curbing extremist influence. The second phase will consist of militaries from Kenya, Djibouti and Ethiopia, a unified front serves as a powerful symbol of cooperation against militant threats in the Horn of Africa.
President Hassan Sheikh Mohamed, now operating from a base in Dhusamareb, has been vocal in his call to expedite the liberation of Galmudug territories, eyeing this as a precursor to the upcoming second phase. This subsequent operation, involving a coalition of neighbouring states, aims to reclaim larger territories under Al-Shabaab’s control, focusing on regions within Southern Somalia. of Jubaland and South West.
With tensions escalating, air support has been confirmed for ground operations. Warplanes are on standby, ready to enhance the capabilities of the allied forces.
In anticipation of the joint offensive, Al-Shabaab militants are reportedly strengthening their defences in Elbur. Unconfirmed sources suggest that local civilians might have been armed, hinting at potential alliances.
Post the Central Regions operation, military blueprints indicate a strategic move towards Al-Shabaab enclaves in the South West and Jubbaland areas.
