(25-08-23) LAS-ANOD – SSC-Khaatumo troops of the Sool, Sanaag, Cayn (SSC) and Khaatumo State successfully overtook Somaliland’s primary military base on the periphery of Laasaanood, following a skirmish that spanned less than four hours this Friday.

Maraaga, which served as a potent Somaliland fortress, along with the expansive Goja’adde base, now finds itself under SSC control. The aftermath of the battle showcased the extent of the victory with SSC-Khatumo administration unveiling an array of military equipment, including vehicles, arms and ammunition left behind by the retreating Somaliland forces.

This victory is hailed as the most substantial achievement for the SSC administration since the onset of the conflict between the two sides in February. Having suffered this surprise setback, the remnants of the Somaliland military have taken refuge in Dhodida, located northwest, in a bid to reorganise and recover.

With Lasaanood now serving as the command centre for the SSC-Khatumo administration, their spokesperson underscored the magnitude of Friday’s triumph. They proudly announced the acquisition of all adjoining Somaliland military outposts, further enhancing their arsenal with seized war vehicles and significant stocks of weaponry and ammunition.

Despite urgings from the international community, including an appeal from the United Nations Security Council, Somaliland remained steadfast in their refusal to withdraw from Sool. Reports over the last eight months highlight Somaliland forces near Lasaanood repeatedly resorting to artillery strikes, even targeting medical facilities and critical infrastructure.

This military upset for Somaliland unfolds amidst a growing political maelstrom in Hargeisa. President Muse Bihi’s inability to conduct presidential elections has plunged the region into chaos and violence. Analysts, evaluating the current situation, surmise that Somaliland will find it challenging to recuperate from this setback, potentially leading to a complete relinquishment of their hold over Sool.
