(16-09-23) MOGADISHU — Ugas Khalif Airport in Beledweyne has remained closed for the second day running, disrupting air travel and affecting local businesses, according to airport officials.
The stand-off involves HirShabelle Vice President Yusuf Ahmed Hagar Dabaged and Minister of Transport and Aviation Muse Salad, both of whom are natives of the Hiran region. Their ongoing disagreement concerning the airport’s taxation policy has resulted in the suspension of all commercial flights. Currently, only military aircraft operated by the ATMIS army are utilising the facility.
Airlines operating out of Beledweyne are facing severe disruptions, with Mohamed Ali, a senior airport official, urging the federal government and the HirShabelle administration for immediate intervention. “This stand-off has caused a significant interruption in our operations,” Ali stated.
This closure is the latest in a series of disruptions for the airport, which has been shut multiple times due to administrative disputes within the regional government. Moreover, the Hiran region is already grappling with other ongoing challenges, including confrontations with Al-Shabaab and lingering tensions following the recent resignation of Ali Jayte.
The continuing stalemate is putting considerable strain on local residents, many of whom depend on the airport for both personal and business travel. As people anxiously await a resolution, the situation remains tense, affecting daily lives and commerce in the region.
