(30-09-23) GALKAYO — The Military High Court confirmed death sentences on Saturday for Anas Abdulqadir Ali Mohamud (Salman), and Adan Mursal Mohamed Macalin (Iidoow). Both assassins carried out assassinations for the extremist group Al-Shabaab. The ruling reinforces earlier convictions by the Court of First Instance and follows a string of violent incidents in Galkayo, Mudug region.

Salman and Iidoow were part of a network of six individuals behind assassinations, ambushes and bombings in Mudug, notably in the city of Galkayo. The attacks mainly targeted worshippers exiting mosques. Salman faced charges for the killings of Abdi Adan Siyad (Abdi Dheere) and Ilmi Ali Guled, while Iidoow was charged with the murder of Mohamed Jama Mohamed (Agabiyood).

Security forces arrested the two suspects on 17 April during an operation in response to a bomb attack targeting a vehicle owned by the Danab forces. Following comprehensive investigations by the Military Court Prosecution Office, the Court of First Instance sentenced both men to death by shooting on 22 May.

Defence lawyers promptly appealed the death sentences. The Military High Court accepted the appeals on 24 September, allowing ample time for further case examinations. This Saturday, General Liban Ali Yarow, Chairman of the Military High Court, announced the court’s decision to uphold the original death sentences.
