(29-09-23) MOGADISHU — In a heartening outpouring of unity, the streets of Mogadishu were awash with impassioned faces on Friday with the slogan “Victory or Death”. Civilians, soldiers, and government officials joined forces in a bold public demonstration against extremist group Al-Shabaab, signalling what could be a transformative moment in the community’s long-standing battle against terror.
Filling the air with songs of patriotism and chants of defiance, the demonstrators gathered in the Abdicasis district near the picturesque Lido beach. Among them was Abdifitah Barre, Director of Education for the Banadir region, who said, “We’ve entered a war of ‘Victory or Death.’ This is our collective stand.”
Police officers and soldiers not only provided security but also lent a human touch, walking amidst the gathered crowds. Some even took turns addressing the audience from makeshift podiums, urging the people to fortify their support for the government’s ongoing efforts against Al-Shabaab.
President Hassan Sheikh has been absent from the capital for two months, leading the offensive against Al-Shabaab in Dhusamareb, Galmudug. Despite his physical absence, his spirit was ever-present, echoing the sentiments from the front lines. His commitment to fighting Al-Shabaab has served as a rallying point for this collective civilian action.
Friday’s demonstrations seem to mark a tipping point, as the public fear that had long held the community captive showed signs of dissipating. “Enough is enough,” was the clear message, as men, women, and even children openly denounced the extremist group and backed the government’s campaign for its elimination.
By bravely taking to the streets, the people of Mogadishu have sent an unambiguous message. They’re turning their backs on fear and setting their sights on a future free from the tyranny of Al-Shabaab.
As the demonstrations were continuing, a dark turn of events unfolded near the presidential palace. A suicide bomber struck, killing eight presidential guards and injuring 20 more.
